Hepatitis delta – explained in a simple way

Hepatitis delta (also called hepatitis D) is a liver disease that can be either newly contracted (acute) or chronic. This illness is triggered by the hepatitis D virus (HDV) and can lead to severe damage to the liver if it goes undetected.

There is however one very important characteristic. In order for the hepatitis D virus to be able to harm the liver, it requires a partner. This partner is the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Without this partner, the hepatitis D virus is harmless. Should a person already carry the hepatitis B virus, then he or she can also become infected with the hepatitis D virus at a later point in time. This type of infection is referred to as a superinfection. It is also possible to get infected with hepatitis B and hepatitis D at the same time. This kind of infection is called simultaneous infection.

As with hepatitis B, hepatitis D is often a “silent” disease. This means that people who are affected are often unaware of the infection and do not perceive any signs or symptoms. The liver is nevertheless being damaged. In the case of a concurrent, long-lasting infection with HBV and HDV, also called chronic infection, the infection is more severe than if a person is only infected with HBV. Infection with both viruses signifies that damage and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) progresses more rapidly and the risk of developing liver cancer is increased. Hepatitis delta, i.e. infection with HBV and HDV, is considered the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis.

The project

Did you know that hepatitis delta is considered a rare disease and is often difficult to detect? It has been estimated that about 5% of people suffering from a chronic hepatitis B viral infection are also infected with the hepatitis D virus. However, people who do not know that they are at risk or already possibly infected will not have themselves tested.

By means of an educational campaign, we as Kautz⁵ gUG, in collaboration with the World Hepatitis Alliance and MYR GmbH, would like to create awareness and understanding for this disease. On this page you will find some important information about the disease as well as about the project. Our aim is to educate people about hepatitis D. We therefore want to provide information about the disease, in particular for HBV sufferers and people at increased risk of infection.
